Catalana de Perforacions is involved in the execution of a 165‑metre‑long microtunnel using its microtunnelling machine Meritxell.
The project
The extension of Line 8 (L8) of the Barcelona Metro is one of the city’s most significant infrastructure and sustainable mobility projects. Promoted by the Government of Catalonia, the project will connect the Baix Llobregat and Vallès branches of Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC), strengthening the metropolitan railway network and improving public transport intermodality in Barcelona.
The project includes the construction of 4 kilometres of new underground alignment, the creation of three new stations —Gràcia, Hospital Clínic and Francesc Macià— as well as the refurbishment of Plaça Espanya station, one of the city’s main transport hubs.
Execution by Catalana de Perforacions
Within this ambitious project, Catalana de Perforacions is carrying out a 165‑metre‑long, 3‑metre‑diameter microtunnel, an essential auxiliary infrastructure for the proper development of the works and their internal logistics.
The works are executed using a Herrenknecht AVN200 microtunnelling machine, equipped with an extension up to 3,000 mm. This robust and proven technological solution is particularly suitable for microtunnelling works in complex urban environments, providing high accuracy in alignment control and ensuring safe and efficient execution while adapting to the site’s geotechnical conditions.
This technology allows the microtunnel to be constructed in a controlled manner with minimal surface impact, a key factor in an area with high building density, heavy traffic and numerous underground utilities. The microtunnel connects the launch shaft located on Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes with Joan Miró Park and its main purpose is to facilitate the removal of excavated material, optimising internal logistics flows.
This intervention improves the overall operational efficiency of the project and reduces its impact on the urban environment, while highlighting Catalana de Perforacions’ capability to deliver specialised technical solutions in highly complex underground construction projects, combining experience, technology and rigorous planning.
Joint Venture Members
The L8 extension works are being carried out by a Joint Venture (JV) formed by:
This JV is responsible for the overall execution of the project, which is divided into two main construction lots.
Catalana de Perforacions’ participation fits within this collaborative framework, contributing its specialised expertise in drilling and underground works.
Commitment to underground works and sustainable mobility
Through its involvement in the L8 extension, Catalana de Perforacions reaffirms its commitment to the development of sustainable infrastructure, providing efficient technical solutions for projects of high complexity and significant urban impact.
Participation in this landmark project strengthens the company’s track record in drilling and underground construction, while actively contributing to improved mobility and quality of life in the city of Barcelona.
